Borrowing Policy

Library accounts must be completed in person at the library.  A parent or legal guardian must accompany and authorize an account for anyone under 18 years of age.  The library does not set a minimum age for a library account but will leave the determination of when the juvenile is responsible enough to receive a card and borrow materials on their own to the parent or legal guardian.  We will need:

Proof of Identification and Residency

A library card will be issued immediately upon showing proof of identity and proof of residency.  Patrons 18 and older must present an acceptable form of identification such as:

  • State-issued driver’s license or identification card

  • Military identification card

  • Student identification card

In addition, proof of residency must be verified by one of the following items:

  • Michigan driver’s license or identification card

  • Current utility bill

  • Lease agreement

  • Current bill from a major credit card

  • And any other proof deemed acceptable by the library director

By receiving borrowing privileges, the patron agrees to comply with all rules and regulations of the library, pay all fines and fees, to make good any loss or damage to library materials incurred while in use and to give immediate notice of any change of address or phone number.  Parents and/or legal guardians are responsible for monitoring their children’s internet usage and checkouts.  Materials will be loaned only to those patrons with borrowing privileges in good standing with the Potterville Benton Township District Library.

Loan Periods and Late Fine Amounts

  • Books 14 days

  • Audio Books 14 days

  • Music CD’s 14 days

  • DVD’s 2 days

Item limits per library card

There are limits on the number of checkouts of library materials by patrons.  Limits are different for adults and children as well as patrons outside the Potterville Benton Township District.  For full details, please see the library staff.

Renewal Policy

You may renew library materials once, except for the following items which may not be renewed:

  • Adult new books

  • Items on hold

  • Any item which has been previously renewed

Renewals may be done in person, by telephone or online.  You will be asked to enter your library card number and PIN to access your library account.  Books and audio materials are renewed once for 14 days from the date of renewal.  DVD renewals must be done in person at the library.

Book Reserve Procedure

If the item you wish to borrow is not on the shelf, you may reserve it by placing a hold. This can be done in person, on the phone or using the online catalog. You will be asked to enter your library card number and PIN to access your library account. The library staff will notify you when your item is available.

The materials must be claimed within a week. If the materials are not picked up, the materials will be offered to the next person on the waiting list. If no one is waiting, the materials will be returned to the circulating collection. New books on order may be placed on reserve pending their arrival at the Library.
